Spaces: The Golden Mile
by Pride History Group
Gay discos, pubs and night spots sprang up around Darlinghurst, Kings Cross and Bondi Junction. ‘Oxford Street’ became code for homosexual in the late 1970s to early 1980s. The first lesbian bars also emerged and mixed ‘gay discos’. The first lesbian bars are described by Roni McGarrigle and Sandra Mackay. Ray Prasad, Greg Tucker, Jan McInnes, Margaret Cummings and Karen Brown recall the discos and drag venues.
