The Life and Times of Sydney's Camp Social Clubs
Sydney’s camp social clubs emerged in the ‘60s. These clubs overcame mainstream Sydney’s homophobia to carve their own spaces and create life-long friendships.
Camp as a Row of Tents begins with the flamboyant displays by drag queens at the Movie and Artists’ Balls in the ‘50s. Camp social clubs open to women and men formed through networks of friends from 1962 through to the early ‘70s. From the ‘70s on Sydney saw the setting up gender specific clubs as “camp” gave way to “gay” and “lesbian”.
The booklet is based on interviews with participants in these events and illustrated with images donated from their personal collections.
