Witte, John

John Witte (1952-)

John Witte is a founding member of Sydney's Pride History Group (PHG) and is responsible for many of the oral history interviews in the PHG collection. Here, John is interviewed by fellow PHG member, Michael Mullins. John first recalls his early childhood, growing up in Murwillumbah on NSW's far north coast and his move to Sydney to attend university. John has long been involved in activism, and was heavily involved in trade union politics throughout his working career with Sydney Parcels. This led onto his involvement with gay trade union groups. John also shares his memories of his involvement in the national homosexual conferences, CAMP INC, and the motivations for first Mardi Gras. The interview also covers the origins of Pride History Group in collecting and publishing the story of the 78ers, and its official formation in 2003.
