SPECIAL 35 YEAR ANNIVERSARY EVENT

No Longer Criminals: Remembering the Decriminalisation of Homosexuality in NSW

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the legislation of male same-sex activity in New South Wales. This landmark in the legalisation of male same-sex activity received assent on 8th June 1984. The achievement of this reform was far from easy and took enormous effort, strategic thinking and great courage on the part of LGBTIQ advocates. In a panel, advocates intimately involved in LGBTIQ rights and reform will discuss the struggle for reform, the community networks that proved so important and the relationships with government that mattered.

They will reflect on the meaning of this achievement. Did the gay community change in the aftermath of decriminalisation? Thirty-five years later, what lessons can we learn from this activism? How can we best remember the individuals who drove such a momentous reform and made male homosexuality legal across New South Wales?

University of Technology, Building 10, Level 5, Room 580.
Building 10 is the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences building — the old Fairfax/SMH building — just off Broadway across from Central Park. Once inside take the lift to level 5 and cross the bridge in the atrium to Room 580.
